Queensland Forum looks to drive investment in sports tech economy

A Sports Technology Trade and Investment Roundtable has been held in Brisbane to promote trade opportunities and investment interest in the lead up to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Held yesterday, the forum, moderated by former Wallaby and Australian Sports Commission Executive General Manager, Pat Howard, has set out to identify export and investment opportunities, help local companies to grow and to attract high value talent to support continued growth.

With Australia’s sports tech sector now equal to $4 billion fintech industry, Trade and Investment Queensland (TIQ), the Queensland Government's global business agency, is to introduce a dedicated sports tech stream within its latest Go Global Export Program.

The program provides matched funding of up to $25,000 to support Queensland companies who are export ready launching into new international markets.

Commenting on the initiative, Queensland Treasurer and Minister for Trade and Investment, Cameron Dick stated “Queensland is attracting high-growth and globally significant companies from interstate and overseas, with great interest in being a part of the evolution of technology in the sporting arena.

“Since the announcement of Brisbane as host city of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Queensland has accelerated the progress of innovation in the sports tech sector.

“The growth of Queensland’s sports tech economy has seen the development and commercialisation of new concepts which are transforming the world of sports in our State.”

Queensland Minister for Tourism, Innovation and Sport and Minister Assisting the Premier on Olympics and Paralympics Sport and Engagement, Stirling Hinchliffe added “our runway to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games is an enormous opportunity to build Queensland’s Silicon Valley of sports tech innovation.

“Queensland-made diagnostic and spectator technology is already used by the giants of global sport to give teams a competitive edge and grow fan engagement.

“The Roundtable is about helping entrepreneurs open new doors to investment and commercialisation to create good Queensland jobs and fast-track 2032 Games legacy.”

Since the Go Global Export Program was launched in 2020, close to three million has been funded resulting in over $37 million direct export outcomes for Queensland businesses.

Round five of the Go Global Export Program will open applications on 31st July 2023.

Brisbane will be hosting the Australia Sports Tech Conference at the end of August as the centrepiece of the broader week that runs from Tuesday 29th August to Friday 1st September.
